Englehart suffering since hospital amalgamation

Dear Editor:

I am writing to express my concerns about what has been happening to the Englehart & District Hospital since the Amalgamation Process began, with the Kirkland & District Hospital.

First of all, we’ve been losing services, and we were told, this would not happen. Our Laboratory has been sourced out. We no longer have physiotherapy for outpatients. Our people must now travel to Kirkland Lake or Temiskaming Shores for respiratory therapy.

The people of Englehart want to know why this is happening and what is going to be cut next. Another problem is that apparently our Family Doctors are no longer allowed to visit their patients in our hospital. This unacceptable. It seems that only locums or fill-in doctors are being used at Englehart & District Hospital.

Another, more noticeable problem is that, not only has our hospital been cutting services on the inside, but it seems they couldn’t afford to cut the grass outside until just recently. What a disgrace. The grass around our hospital and the medical clinic was allowed to grow into a hay field before being cut. This is what we would expect to see outside an abandoned building, or one soon to be closed. The people of this area didn’t spend a lot of their time and effort fundraising, years ago, to build this hospital, only to see this happening now. Also, I don’t think the Kirkland & District Hospital property has been neglected like this.

The town of Englehart doesn’t seem to be concerned. Perhaps when property values go down and the tax base is reduced, they will be. But it will be too late.

Young families. that are looking to relocate, will be looking for good health care, which includes long term family doctors, nurses and a good hospital, that supplies needed services. This will be very high on the priority list for those choosing to move to Englehart.

How are the seniors in Englehart, or anyone without a vehicle, going to travel to Kirkland Lake or Temiskaming Shores for physio or respiratory therapy, etc? Is the board, or town of Englehart, going to provide a transportation system for them?

The people of Englehart, need and deserve some answers to these concerns from the Hospital Board, and we need the Mayor and Council, more involved.

Thank you for allowing me to express my concerns on this very important subject.

Yours truly,

Leonard Farrow,

Englehart
