2021 is starting off the way 2020 ended with the cancellation of multiple community events and activities. The winter blues seem to be taking a darker hue with the cancellation of one of Cochrane’s favourite times of the year.
It was announced at council last night that the annual Chimo Winter Carnival, which has run since 1963, is not moving forward this February.
Over the years, some of the events of carnival have been postponed by weather, discontinued from lack of participation or enhance because of success but, this year, it took a microscopic virus to end any chance of having a carnival.
Although it is a disappointment, it really isn’t a surprise as the number of COVID cases continue to climb and the governments have started to enact more measures to help prevent the spread.
Jason Boyer, Director of Community Services noted that “I know there has been a lot of questions over the last week or so, and we have discussed it through the REC Board and it seems that everyone is in support of it been cancelled as we know it.”
